Finding a family dentist in Asheville means finding one office you can trust with everyone’s routine care. That includes checkups, cleanings, fillings, crowns, and gum treatment. When you see different offices for different needs, your health history gets scattered, and small problems can slip through.

At Travis J. Calhoun, DDS, we have cared for families across Asheville and western North Carolina for over 30 years. Dr. Travis Calhoun grew up here, followed his father into dentistry, and treats every patient the way he would want his own mom treated. You can browse all of our dental services to see what we offer under one roof.

What Does a Family Dentist Do?

A family dentist provides preventive, restorative, and general dental care for patients of all ages, all in one place. That continuity means your dentist learns your history and your goals over time. Your care becomes more personal with every visit. At our office, family dental care includes:

Together, these services help keep your smile healthy at every stage of life. If you need more involved care, such as bridges or dentures, our restorative dentistry team can help with that too.

Why Does Regular Dental Care Matter for Your Family?

Your mouth is closely tied to the rest of your body. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes oral health is connected to overall health. Poor gum health can also make blood sugar harder to control for people living with diabetes. Dental problems can stay quiet until they reach a more serious stage, so regular checkups matter even when nothing hurts. Catching a small problem early may mean simpler treatment than waiting until something hurts.

Gum health is a particular strength of our practice. Our two hygienists lead our periodontal program. They work with Dr. Calhoun to catch gum changes early and explain your treatment options clearly. If you want to learn more, read about our gum disease treatment.

How Often Should You See Us?

The right schedule depends on your own risk for cavities and gum disease. We review your exam findings and recommend a plan to fit you. The CDC lists at least a yearly dental check-up and professional cleaning among the ways to protect your oral health. Our guide on how often to see a hygienist goes into more detail.

What Can You Expect From a First Visit With Dr. Calhoun?

Your first appointment is about getting to know you. We take a thorough medical and dental history, listen to your concerns, and ask what you want from your dental care. We want you to feel comfortable asking questions, and we take the time to answer them. Your visit may also include X-rays, a gum health assessment, and a review of any existing dental work.

You leave with a clear picture of your oral health and a plan you feel good about. Our staff has been with us for years, so you see familiar faces from visit to visit. Our new patient page lists the forms you can complete before you arrive.

Modern Tools and Personal Care

Dr. Calhoun wants every patient to feel relaxed. We keep the atmosphere friendly and take time to explain what is happening and why. He also completes around 30 hours of continuing education each year to keep his skills current.

We use digital X-rays and Trios digital scanning, which can mean more accuracy and more comfort for you. If you are curious, read how digital scanning compares with traditional impressions. You can also see how a private practice differs from a corporate dental office.

Are You Accepting New Patients and Do You Take Insurance?

Yes, we welcome new patients from Asheville, Arden, and the rest of Buncombe County. Our office is on Medical Park Drive in Asheville. We are a fee-for-service practice, which means we are out-of-network with all dental insurance plans and do not accept insurance as payment. Many patients can submit a claim to their insurance provider for partial reimbursement, and our office can provide the documentation you need. Payment is collected at the time of treatment.

Fee-for-service care also means no insurance company decides which treatment you receive. If you want to spread out the cost of care, we offer financing through CareCredit and Cherry. You can read more about our payment and financing options. You can also learn what out-of-network dental benefits mean for your family.
