Young man choosing color of teeth at dentist

There is a version of your smile you have been carrying around in your head for years, and porcelain veneers might be the most direct path to getting there. Whether it is a chipped front tooth, persistent staining that whitening cannot touch, or just a shape that has never quite felt like you, veneers offer a way to make real, lasting changes without overhauling the tooth underneath.

At the Asheville office of Dr. Travis J. Calhoun, DDS, patients have been getting that kind of care for over 30 years. Dr. Calhoun is a general and restorative dentist who trained at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and has built his reputation on doing things right, not rushed. He will walk you through whether veneers make sense for your situation and, if they do, handle the work with the same attention to detail he brings to every service we provide.

What Are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin shells of dental ceramic that bond directly to the front surface of a tooth. They are custom-crafted to match the color, size, and shape you and your dentist agree on, and once in place, they look and feel natural. Because only a small amount of enamel needs to be removed to make room for the veneer, the underlying tooth stays largely intact.

Porcelain is the preferred material for a reason. It is strong, stain-resistant, and it mimics the translucency of natural enamel in a way that composite materials simply cannot match. According to a review published by the National Institutes of Health, porcelain laminate veneers consistently show high success rates and predictable patient outcomes across multiple studies. When placed correctly and well cared for, they can last well over a decade.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Veneers?

Veneers work best when enough healthy enamel remains on the tooth to support bonding. Beyond that, they are a strong option for people dealing with a range of cosmetic concerns. Here are some of the most common situations where veneers are a practical solution:

  • Staining that whitening cannot fix: Discoloration from certain medications, root canal therapy, or excessive fluoride tends to sit deep within the tooth and does not respond well to bleaching. Veneers cover it entirely.
  • Chips and cracks: A small chip on a front tooth changes the whole look of a smile. Veneers restore the shape cleanly.
  • Uneven or worn-down teeth: Years of use or grinding can leave teeth shorter or uneven. Veneers bring symmetry back.
  • Gaps and spacing: Veneers can close minor gaps between teeth without moving them.
  • Irregularly shaped teeth: Teeth that are too small, too narrow, or just oddly shaped can be built out with a veneer to create a more balanced look.

Not every patient is the right fit for veneers. If tooth decay, gum disease, or significant structural damage is present, those issues need to be addressed first. Dr. Calhoun will take the time to evaluate whether veneers are the right call or whether another approach, such as a crown, would better fix the tooth.

What to Expect During the Process

Getting porcelain veneers typically requires two visits. At the first appointment, a small amount of enamel is carefully removed from the front of the tooth to create space for the veneer. Digital impressions are taken and sent to a dental lab, where your custom veneers are fabricated. A temporary veneer is placed in the meantime to protect the tooth and keep it from being exposed while you wait for the permanent veneer.

The Second Appointment

When the permanent veneers return from the lab, they are checked for fit and color before being bonded in place with a specialized dental adhesive. Minor adjustments can be made at this stage to get the bite and appearance exactly right. From there, you leave the office with a finished result, not a temporary one.

The whole process is straightforward, but it does require a patient who is committed to maintaining good oral hygiene afterward. Veneers are durable, but they are not indestructible. Avoiding habits like biting nails, chewing ice, or grinding teeth without a nightguard goes a long way toward protecting them.

What Do Porcelain Veneers Cost?

Veneer cost varies from patient to patient based on how many teeth are involved and what your smile needs to get there, so Dr. Calhoun will not quote a price until he has actually evaluated your teeth. Because veneers are elective, insurance typically does not cover them, but our practice offers financing through CareCredit and Cherry, including 0% options, to help spread the cost out. Why Patients Choose Dr. Travis Calhoun, DDS

Dr. Calhoun is not the kind of dentist who pushes treatments patients do not need. He says it himself: his goal is to treat every patient the way he would want his own family treated. That approach tends to come through clearly in how he handles cosmetic cases, including veneers. He will have an honest conversation with you about whether they are worth doing and what to realistically expect.

Our team has been together a long time, and that continuity shows. Patients do not feel like they are starting over every visit. The new patient experience is designed to be easy and unhurried, and our friendly, experienced staff takes the time to make sure you understand your options before any decisions are made. The practice is fee-for-service and out-of-network, which means the focus stays on what is clinically appropriate, not on what an insurance contract dictates.
